Common ways to use cannabis as a sleep aid

I recommend an either one or two pronged approach for using medical cannabis to help with a good nights sleep.

For first line therapy I recommend an indica vape pen or tincture. 2-3 inhalations or however many drops the packaging recommends, wait 10-20 minutes and you should hopefully drift off into sleep. Using cannabis this way for sleep is the most common method I have found patients to prefer and most find relief.

For patients that are having the problem of waking up during the night I recommend a chew or chocolate containing 5-10 mg of THC to be taken right before one goes to sleep initially. The edible cannabis helps with staying asleep as the effects of eating cannabis can last 4-8 hours where the effect of a vaporizer may only last 2-4 hours.

The two pronged approach for those having a lot of trouble with their sleep is to use an indica vape pen and a 10 mg small edible before bed and also to have the indica vape pen on the bed side table so you can rapidly take an inhalation if you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night to quickly go back to sleep since the time of onset of vaporizing cannabis is only 5-10 minutes.

As always check with your primary care doctor as well for evaluation and a sleep study to ensure you are not having sleep apnea or other disorders.
